Recipe Information

Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 15–20 minutes approximately
Total Time: 20–25 minutes approximately
Category: Home Remedies / Traditional Drinks
Cuisine: Indian
Method: Boiling

Ingredients

  • 1 litre water
  • Raw turmeric or turmeric powder
  • 5–6 tulsi (holy basil) leaves
  • Grated ginger
  • 1 small cinnamon stick
  • 3–4 cloves
  • 2–3 black peppercorns
  • ½ teaspoon ajwain (carom seeds)
  • 1 black cardamom
  • 2 green cardamoms
  • Honey, optional and according to taste

How to Make Homemade Kadha

Step 1 – Prepare the Ingredients

Wash the tulsi leaves and prepare the ginger and turmeric. Keep all the spices ready before you begin.

Step 2 – Add Everything to Water

Pour 1 litre of water into a saucepan or pot.

Add the turmeric, tulsi leaves, grated ginger, cinnamon, cloves, black peppercorns, ajwain, black cardamom and green cardamoms.

Step 3 – Bring to a Boil

Place the pot over the heat and bring the mixture to a boil.

Step 4 – Let the Kadha Reduce

Continue boiling the mixture until the water reduces to approximately 60% of its original quantity. This allows the herbs and spices to infuse into the water.

Step 5 – Strain and Serve

Turn off the heat and strain the Kadha into a cup.

Serve it warm. If you prefer a little sweetness, honey can be added according to taste once the drink has cooled somewhat.

Pro Tips

  • Fresh ginger and raw turmeric can give the Kadha a more robust flavor.
  • Don't add too much black pepper or cloves, as they can overpower the drink.
  • Allow enough time for the water to reduce so the spices infuse properly.
  • Adjust the strength according to your personal taste.
  • If using honey, add it after the Kadha is no longer piping hot.

About the Traditional Ingredients

Tulsi: One of the most familiar herbs used in traditional Indian household drinks.

Ginger: Gives the Kadha its characteristic warming, slightly spicy flavor.

Turmeric: Adds its distinctive earthy flavor and golden color.

Cinnamon: Adds natural sweetness and a warm aroma.

Cloves & Black Pepper: Provide a strong, spicy note.

Ajwain: Adds a distinctive aroma commonly used in Indian cooking and traditional preparations.

Cardamom: Balances the stronger spices with its fragrant flavor.

Together, these ingredients make a deeply aromatic traditional drink particularly enjoyable during cooler weather.

Serving Suggestions

Kadha is best served fresh and warm.

Since the flavor is naturally strong and spicy, you can adjust the amount of ginger, pepper and other spices according to your preference.

Storage Tips

Freshly prepared Kadha is best consumed soon after preparation.

If you have some left over, allow it to cool and store it in a covered container in the refrigerator. Reheat only the amount you need.
