Coriander Water (Dhania Water) | 2 Easy Traditional Morning Drinks
Coriander, or dhania, is one of the most familiar ingredients in an Indian kitchen. We usually add fresh coriander leaves to curries, dals, chutneys and salads, while coriander seeds are an essential part of Indian cooking.
But coriander is also traditionally used to prepare simple infused drinks.
In this post, I'll show you two easy ways to prepare coriander water at home—one using fresh coriander leaves and another using whole coriander seeds.
These drinks can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. However, they should not be considered a treatment for thyroid disorders, hormonal imbalance or other medical conditions.
🌿 Coriander Water at a Glance
Main Ingredient: Coriander (Dhania)
Methods: Fresh coriander leaves or coriander seeds
Preparation: Easy
Best Served: Fresh
Type: Traditional homemade drink
🌱 Method 1: Fresh Coriander Leaves Drink
This is the fresh coriander preparation demonstrated in the AAOCOOKKARE video.
Ingredients
- Fresh coriander leaves (Dhania)
- A small amount of water for grinding
- 1 glass lukewarm water
How to Prepare
Step 1
Wash the fresh coriander leaves thoroughly under clean running water.
Step 2
Remove the thick stems and keep the tender leaves and stems.
Step 3
Place the coriander in a grinder and add only a small amount of water.
Step 4
Grind until you get a smooth green paste.
Step 5
Take approximately 1 spoonful of coriander paste and add it to a glass of lukewarm water.
Step 6
Mix well and drink fresh.
In my original video, this drink is taken early in the morning on an empty stomach. However, there is no need to treat this timing as a medical requirement; choose a time that suits you and your diet.
🫙 How to Store Coriander Paste
For convenience, you can prepare a small quantity of coriander paste in advance.
Store it in a clean, covered glass container in the refrigerator and prepare small batches rather than keeping homemade fresh paste for long periods.
For best freshness, I prefer making a new batch frequently.
🌾 Method 2: Coriander Seed Water
Don't have fresh coriander leaves?
You can also prepare a traditional drink using whole coriander seeds.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon coriander seeds
- 1 glass water
How to Prepare
Step 1
Add 1 tablespoon coriander seeds to a glass of water.
Step 2
Allow the seeds to soak overnight.
Step 3
The next morning, transfer the soaked seeds and water to a pan.
Step 4
Bring it to a boil and gently cook until the quantity of water is reduced.
Step 5
Turn off the heat and allow it to cool to a comfortable drinking temperature.
Step 6
Strain and enjoy.
🌿 Why Coriander?
Fresh coriander is more than just a garnish. It contributes nutrients and plant compounds to the diet, while coriander seeds have been traditionally used in food and beverages.
Coriander is also naturally aromatic, making these simple drinks an interesting way to incorporate a familiar kitchen ingredient into your routine.
It's important, however, to distinguish traditional use from medical treatment. Drinking coriander water has not been established as a replacement for thyroid medication or medical care.
💡 AAOCOOKKARE Tips
- Always wash fresh coriander thoroughly before using it.
- Make fresh coriander paste in small batches.
- Use a clean, dry container for storage.
- Don't add sugar simply to make the drink sweeter.
- If using coriander seeds, use clean, food-grade whole seeds.
- A healthy routine depends on your overall diet, activity, sleep and other lifestyle habits, rather than any single drink.
⚠️ Important Note — Especially for Thyroid Conditions
My original video discusses this drink in relation to thyroid and hormonal health. This article has been updated to provide more careful health information.
Coriander water is a food-based traditional drink, not a treatment or cure for thyroid disease or hormonal imbalance.
If you have hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism or another thyroid condition, do not stop, reduce or replace prescribed medication with coriander water without consulting your healthcare professional.
Anyone with an existing medical condition, taking regular medication, pregnant or breastfeeding, or experiencing persistent symptoms should discuss significant dietary changes with an appropriate healthcare professional.

🌿 Conclusion
Coriander is one of the simplest everyday ingredients in an Indian kitchen, and these two preparations are easy ways to include it in your routine. Whether you prefer fresh coriander leaf water or coriander seed water, both can be prepared at home with very little effort.
Remember that no single drink can replace a balanced diet, healthy lifestyle or appropriate medical care. Enjoy coriander water as a traditional homemade drink, not as a cure or replacement for treatment—especially if you have a thyroid or other medical condition.
