How to Make Homemade Veg Burger

Step 1: Prepare the Vegetable Mixture

Heat about two tablespoons of oil in a pan. Once the oil is hot, add the chopped onion and green chilli. Cook them on high heat for around five minutes until the onions become soft and slightly pink.

Next, add the chopped carrot and green peas. Stir everything well and cook until the vegetables become soft.

Season with salt according to your taste.

Now add Kashmiri red chilli powder, coriander powder, garam masala, black pepper, and amchur powder. Sprinkle a little water so the spices blend nicely with the vegetables.

Using a potato masher, lightly mash the vegetables. This helps everything mix together and gives the burger patties a better texture.

Step 2: Add Rice and Potatoes

Add the boiled rice to the vegetable mixture and mash everything together.

Turn off the heat and transfer the mixture to a bowl.

Now add the mashed potatoes along with freshly chopped coriander leaves. Mix well until everything is evenly combined.

For best results, cover the mixture and refrigerate it for about 20 minutes. This simple step helps the patties hold their shape while frying.

Step 3: Prepare the Batter

In a small bowl, mix together the maida and cornflour.

Add a pinch of salt and slowly pour in water while stirring to make a smooth batter. It should not be too thick or too runny—just enough to coat the patties evenly.

Keep the bread crumbs ready on a separate plate.

Step 4: Shape the Burger Patties

Take a portion of the potato mixture and shape it into a round patty.

Dip it into the prepared batter and then coat it well with bread crumbs.

Gently press the patty slightly so it cooks evenly from the inside while becoming crispy on the outside.

Repeat the same process for all the patties.

Step 5: Fry Until Crispy

Heat oil over medium flame.

Carefully place the patties into the hot oil without overcrowding the pan.

Fry them until both sides turn beautifully golden brown and crispy.

Transfer the fried patties onto a plate lined with paper towels to remove excess oil.

Assemble the Burger

Toast the burger buns lightly on a pan until they're warm and slightly crisp.

Spread mayonnaise on both halves of the bun.

Add a layer of tomato ketchup.

Place one hot and crispy burger patty on the bun.

Top it with lettuce or cabbage, onion slices, and tomato slices.

If you enjoy a little extra flavour, sprinkle a pinch of chaat masala over the vegetables.

Cover with the top bun and your homemade veg burger is ready to enjoy.

My Tips for the Best Veg Burger

After making these burgers many times, I've found a few tricks that always work.

  • Chilling the potato mixture before shaping makes the patties much firmer.
  • Don't fry on high heat. Medium heat gives you a crispy outside while ensuring the inside is fully cooked.
  • Toasting the burger buns makes a big difference in taste and texture.
  • Freshly made patties always taste better than frozen ones.
  • If you're making burgers for kids, skip the green chilli and add a cheese slice instead.

Variations You Can Try

This recipe is very flexible, and you can customize it according to your family's taste.

  • Add sweet corn for extra sweetness and crunch.
  • Mix in grated beetroot for a beautiful colour.
  • Stuff the patties with mozzarella cheese for a cheesy surprise.
  • Use whole wheat burger buns for a healthier option.
  • Make mini burgers for birthday parties or school snacks.

"Whenever my kids ask for burgers, I prefer making these at home because they're healthier, budget-friendly, and everyone enjoys them. I've been making this recipe for years, and the crispy potato patties are always a hit."
